what do we notice?: observing and documenting young children’s encounters with the natural world and mark-making

artist/scholar Rachel Zollinger and Brillante Teachers

Rachel Zollinger will join a Brilliante classroom(s) to work alongside children and teachers studying the transformations of trees along with mark-making materials. Together, they will create an emergent collaborative documentation strategy reflecting mark making with children that will then be studied at a workshop open to educators from different contexts. Rachel will also share her research on drawing through the senses with nature. Educators will also engage with similar materials at the workshop and consider what is possible for their contexts. Participants will engage through dialogue and exchange of ideas with the exhibit.

A workshop for native language teachers who are attending the UNM Native American Language Teachers Summer Institute. Educators will study, dialogue, and exchange ideas with the exhibit as a catalyst.

Zoom participants register by June 1st for art materials to be mailed to you. Materials will be provided for in-person participants.

2.5 hour training certificate

Mary Bliss, Helen McDonald, and Juliet Staveley (CTI facilitators) 

Engage with a diversity of tools and materials to awaken possibilities for teachers and young children. NM early childhood educators across the state will learn more about the Reggio Emilia Approach and the Mosaic of Marks Words Material exhibit. They will also explore mark making and drawing with inspiring materials while making connections with others.

This all day professional development initiative is open to educators in NM, AZ, and Chicago and will include presentations from educators participating in the cross regional study of mark-making. Additionally, participants will engage with the exhibition and experience mark-making materials to consider for their contexts.
